A substantial and most impressive country home that provides beautifully proportioned rooms of great charm and character with high ceilings and fine original features. The accommodation is arranged over three floors and most rooms enjoy far reaching views over the gardens and surrounding area. The accommodation extends to over 5, 500 sq' and provides great flexibility with seven bedrooms, three bathrooms, four large reception rooms all of which are complimented by beautiful mature gardens that extend to in excess of an acre. Vendors Comments "For professional reasons, we were moving from London into this region and looking for a sizeable house." says Malcolm "We learned from the agent that this particular property was just about to come onto the market and they recommended an early viewing. We drove along the impressively long drive up and into the courtyard and, immediately on entering the house we knew it was the one for us. We made an offer the same day, which was accepted and we came to live here with two young children twenty five years ago. The house is steeped in history from both an architectural aspect, and the interesting people who occupied the original mansion, and Alison is in the process of writing a book telling its story. Latterly, it was used as a monastery until 1980, when it was purchased by a developer and inspirationally converted into private dwellings, each with their own freehold and large gardens, but with added the joy of the surrounding fifty acres of pastoral parkland. We occupy a large part of the original mansion house which has been the most fabulous family home. Our large dining hall, especially when a fire is glowing in the hearth, oozes warmth and gives a special welcome to all our visitors and is referred to as our Christmas or feasting room as we have held so many lovely occasions with guests sitting around our large dining table. We also have a large Drawing room with half panelled oak walls and ceiling; an atmospheric room, but incredibly comfortable. Our fabulously spacious kitchen/dining family room is where day to day living takes place. We also have a cellar which we reorganised to become a designated games room/wine cellar." "The gardens are a great size, stylishly landscaped and easy to maintain." adds Alison "We have a lovely York Stone terrace which is ideal for outside dining or quiet relaxation in the surrounding peace and tranquillity. Also, it's a delightful and convenient garden in which to entertain large numbers of guests and, using a marquee, we have enjoyed three weddings here, plus numerous other happy events. Although beautifully tucked away, access to all shops, amenities, schools, road and rail links is extremely convenient." "We shall miss so many things when we move, particularly the space and the happy times spent sharing the house with our friends but, first and foremost, a wonderful family home in which children have blossomed into adulthood." A Brief History The original Blakesware mansion was situated south of the current house on the banks of the River Ash. The Plumer family, a renowned political and county family, owned the house through several generations during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In the latter part of their tenure, they employed a housekeeper Mary Field, the grandmother of Charles Lamb, who with his sister Mary frequently came to visit. Lamb's "Blakesmoor in H.. .shire" is a reference to Blakesware. The Plumers moved to nearby Gilston, and after the death of the last William Plumer, the house was demolished by his wife Jane in 1823. Martin Hadsley Gosselin, a Ware magistrate and son of Admiral Thomas Gosselin, from a prominent Guernsey family who had settled in Hertfordshire, purchased the Blakesware estate in 1850. He died in 1868 before building on the land, but after his death, his wife Frances undertook the building of a new mansion in "the Wilderness" up the hill from the old house. The architect was George Devey, well known in Victorian England for his neo-Jacobean constructions with large casement windows and tall angled chimneys. When Frances died in 1892, the estate passed to her eldest son, Sir Martin Lemarchant Hadsley Gosselin. A career diplomat, "Marchie" was often away from Blakesware, but like his mother, he adored the house and its setting. Sir Martin had converted to Roman Catholicism and in 1880 married the Hon Katherine "Kitty" Gerard, daughter of the 1st Baron Robert Gerard from Garswood in Lancashire, from a long established landed Catholic family. His mother's family were staunchly Church of England, and so it was not until his mother had died that Sir Martin had a Catholic chapel added to the house and dedicated to his wife. It was designed by Edward Goldie, from a family of architects of Catholic churches throughout England, and was consecrated by Cardinal Vaughan in 1896. Sir Martin Gosselin died in 1905 at the early age 57 in Portugal where he was then based, having never fully recovered from a carriage accident the previous year. Blakesware passed to his only son Alwyn, but he died in battle in the First World War. In 1906 Sir Martin's eldest daughter May had married Frederick, the 3rd Baron Gerard, her first cousin and Kitty's nephew. May and Freddy gradually gave up their other country estates at Garswood and Eastwell Park in Kent, and Blakesware became the Gerard family seat in the 1920s. Tragedy struck in 1932, when the main wing of the mansion was destroyed by fire. The burnt out wing was not rebuilt. The surviving wing was modified by the architect Paul Phipps and the Gerards then lived in the part of the mansion that exists today. After his parents' deaths in the 1950s, the 4th Baron Robert Gerard built a more modest house for himself on the estate and in 1960 sold the mansion and 53 acres surrounding it to the Roman Catholic Order of the Blessed Sacrament. The monks of this order rebuilt the destroyed wing, but not to its original size, and inhabited Blakesware until 1980. When the property became too expensive to maintain, they sold it to a developer, who renamed it Blakesware Manor and converted it into several private residences, two in the main mansion, one of which is 3 Blakesware Manor, two in the monks' addition, one in the chapel and one in the kitchens.
